How to Use a Corner Clamp

Joining corners is a basic carpentry skill that must be mastered to create more than basic projects. Holding a corner still while you install fasteners can be challenging. A corner, or miter, clamp gives you the advantage of working as if you had a third hand. Multiple corner clamps can be used to assemble boxes quickly and easily with one clamp at each corner.

Press the thumb button to open the jaws of the clamp. Stand the pieces you intend to join on edge, so that the corners are aligned as they will be when joined. Hold the two pieces steady with one hand while you lift the clamp up and over the corner of your joint.

Look for the 90-degree corner in the back of the clamp in front of the handle. Position the clamp so that the handle points diagonally out from the corner of the joint. Fit the clamp down on top of the two pieces, with the corner between them, fitted into the corner of the clamp. Squeeze the handle to draw the inside piece of the clamp toward the handle and tighten the clamp. Continue tightening until the clamp is snug.

Nail or screw the joint together with the clamp in place, depending on the project you are building. Push the thumb release to release it. Lift the clamp from the top of the joint.

Set up the next joint and fit the clamp onto the next corner to hold it in place. Continue around your project, fitting the clamp and building each joint as you go.
