How to Thin Minwax Wipe-On Poly

Minwax wipe-on poly, or polyurethane, is a durable finish for wood surfaces. This is not a stain; the poly will go on clear and it will not interfere with the natural color of the wood. If you do wish to apply a stain to the surface, do so before applying the wipe-on poly. This protective finish is oil-based. It is ideal for wood furniture and similar surfaces. The manufacturer does not recommend using it on wood floors.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the surface. Only apply Minwax Wipe-On poly to surfaces that are free of dirt and debris. If you have just sanded the surface, apply mineral oil to a cloth and wipe the surface to remove the dust.

    • 2

Shake the can of Minwax poly before opening it.

    • 3

Dip a corner of a soft, clean cloth into the Minwax Wipe-On.

    • 4

Rub the wipe-on poly into the surface of the wood, distributing evenly. Add more of the product to your cloth, as needed.

    • 5

Allow the wood surface to dry for two to three hours.

    • 6

Sand the wood lightly with 220-grit sandpaper. Use a cloth dipped in mineral oil to wipe away the dust.

    • 7

Distribute a second coat of Minwax Wipe-On poly to the surface. Allow it to dry for a full 24 hours. If you wish to apply a third coat, allow it to dry for two to three hours and sand the surface again before applying the poly.
