How to Attach Baseboard Molding

Attaching a baseboard molding is not too difficult if you take your time and get exact measurements before making any cuts. Be careful to make exact cuts to lay out the right angles on the molding. Working around corners often requires you to cut the ends of the molding on an angle, and any spaces in the corners can make your baseboard molding look bad.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the baseboard molding out on the floor against the wall to see if you need to trim any of the molding to make it fit. Mark the top side of the molding with a pencil where any cuts need to be made.

    • 2

Mark any angles that need to be cut on the top side of the molding using a straight edge to mark the angle. Place the wood molding in the miter saw box and line the pencil mark up with the miter saw.

    • 3

Cut the baseboard molding with the saw to fit and use a fine-grit sandpaper to remove any rough edges on the molding. Set the baseboard molding against the wall to verify that it fits along the wall and, using a hammer, secure the molding to the wall with finish nails.

Place a bead of caulk along the top and bottom of the molding with a tube of caulk and a caulk gun to seal the baseboard molding along the wall. Clean off any excess caulk with a damp paper towel.
