Locate places of likely termite infestations. Wooden foundations touching the ground, windows, and doors are all common places. If you find any fecal pellets around window sills or doors, this indicates a problem. Wherever you suspect infestation, you should place your bait stations.
Dig a shallow hole near the areas you suspect termite activity. Line the hole with small pieces of wood. Fill the rest of the hole with polystyrene foam. The wood draws the termites and the foam kills them and others once they bring it back to the colony.
If you find any suspicious areas inside your house, you might have to use less chemicals in your bait stations. Home with pets or small children should use borax surrounded by wood instead of polystyrene foam. Attics and basements are the most common places to find infestations indoors.
Call a professional termite exterminator and let them know you suspect termites in your home and you have set homemade bait monitors. They may want to come out and inspect the property for themselves right away, or they may ask you to monitor the stations for a few weeks before calling them with the results. This helps them determine the severity of the problem and the proper action to take.
