How to Raise a Dent in Wood

Many methods are used for repairing dented wood. The majority of them require sanding or filling the dent with wood filler. This changes the original look and feel of the wood and is not always desired. Another method which is less destructive is applying some hot water to the dent. The wood naturally absorbs the hot water which expands the fibers, slowly lifting the dent. This method requires the wood to be unpainted but works in many situations.

Instructions

  1. Hot Water

    • 1

Fill kettle with water and boil.

    • 2

Pour the hot water into a glass or bowl.

    • 3

Fill the eyedropper with water and apply a few drops directly to the dent. As the water is absorbed into the woods fibers and evaporates, it slowly lifts the dent. This method may take several applications to fully lift the dent.

    Denatured Alchohol

    • 4

Find a location that has nothing flammable nearby. A steel work bench in a well-ventilated area is ideal. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby for emergencies.

    • 5

Fill the eyedropper with denatured alcohol.

    • 6

Apply several drops of the alcohol into the dent.

    • 7

Light the alcohol with a lighter. The alcohol burns very fast which steams the dent, slowly raising it. This method may require several applications to completely remove the dent.
