Wood Finishing Products

Wood can be finished in a variety of ways. The two main varieties of finish are paint and stain. Within each of these finish types, there is an almost endless choice of colors and glosses that can be combined to get the desired effect. When choosing finishing products, read the label instructions and base your decision on both the look you want and the product's ease of use.
  1. Natural Look

    • The natural wood look is common in rustic and country decor. It also works well with many fine antiques. Boiled linseed and tung oils are the standard conditioner used to restore and seal the wood's natural moisture. The oil can be left as is, or covered with a coat of wax. This two-part finish will last for years. It also can be re-coated easily when minor dings and scratches occur.

    Paint

    • On the opposite end of the scale from the bare wood look is paint. Latex is the standard paint these days. Choose your product to match the application. Exterior paints are heavier in ultraviolet protection, while interior paints typically have more color choice. Most are available in a variety of sheens. Remember that proper application is an integral part of a quality finish and use the best brush you can afford.

    Stain

    • Wood stains are available in both solvent- and water-based versions in most colors. The oil, or solvent base, will last longer and provides a finish that is typically harder, but is more difficult to clean up and can be irritating to the skin and breathing. Most stains will need a clear coat on top to seal them. These are available in both water and oil bases. It is best to use both products from the same maker for best results.

    Stain and Finish All-in-One

    • All-in-one stains contain a polyurethane varnish that allows the finish to be applied in one product. The finish quality is not quite as fine as using separate products, but is more than satisfactory for most projects. Choose a color and sheen that matches the existing woodwork or the space your project piece will inhabit.
