Paste wax is a soft, solid varnish that homemakers have used for centuries to enhance the appearance of wood, plastic or metal furniture and tools while creating a protective barrier against water. A thin layer of paste wax over oil, lacquer, shellac, varnish or polyurethane finishes can fill in cracks and imperfections, deepen the color of an object or create an attractive shine. You can make your own paste wax with paraffin or beeswax and paint thinner.
