Select a basic flat casing as the main board for the molding. This can be a 1-by-6-inch flat casing board for example. The width of the board will depend on the scale of the room and other existing woodwork.

    • 2

Place the flat casing flat on a work surface. Lay a piece of crown or cove molding with the bottom edge on the side of the flat casing. This will form the top portion of the combined trim molding.

    • 3

Position dental, rope or small cove molding underneath the crown or cove molding. This will add a bit of detail below the crown or cove.

    • 4

Align a small quarter round molding below the trim piece from step three to finish off the molding build up. Experiment with different combinations of moldings using this basic framework for the build-up until you are satisfied with the appearance of the profile of the combined molding.
