How to Stop a Board From Curving

Untreated wood boards absorb moisture from precipitation or humidity in the air. This moisture can cause the boards to swell, warp and curve. In addition to being unattractive, curved boards are unstable and may result in damage to a wood structure as the ends of the boards slide off of screws and nails holding them in place. Since wood that absorbs moisture is vulnerable to rotting, it is best to treat your boards with a protective waterproof coating.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the wood with a sponge soaked in warm, soapy water to remove dirt and grease. Rinse the wood with plain water and let it dry thoroughly before proceeding.

    • 2

Sand the wood’s surface with 250 grit sandpaper, working along the grain. Brush or sweep away any dust when you’re finished sanding.

    • 3

Paint on a coat of water sealer marked for use with wood. Wait for the sealer to dry and apply a second coat. The water sealer will protect the wood from moisture and prevent future warping.
