How to Remove a Delta 15-655 Drill Chuck J33 Taper

The Delta 15-655 is a variable-speed drill press with a maximum 15-inch depth between the chuck and support column; its speed can be set between 450 and 4,700 revolutions per minute (RPM) when equipped with a 1,725 RPM motor. The 15-655's chuck uses a J33 taper to hold it to the drill press spindle. Most drill presses require the use of special wedges to separate the chuck from the spindle; the Delta 15-655 has a built-in device that facilitates the chuck’s easy removal.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the drill press's power cord from the outlet.

    • 2

Lay padding on the drill press table to protect the chuck and table in the event you drop the chuck.

    • 3

Place the spanner wrench, Delta part number 15-838, into the hole in the collar just above the chuck’s body.

    • 4

Place the chuck key into one of the holes on the chuck’s nose.

    • 5

Hold the chuck still while you rotate the spanner wrench to the left. This loosens the collar on the spindle and forces the chuck off the spindle's taper.

    • 6

Pull the chuck the rest of the way off the spindle.
