How to Use a Roman Ogee

Using a Roman ogee router attachment allows a woodworker to produce decorative edging on wood projects. This type of router bit is usually used for mouldings or for edging tables and chairs but can be used on almost any furniture. By adjusting the depth of the routing bit, several different decorative edges can be produced. There are several types of Roman ogee bits but each one creates a cyma (S-shaped) curve. Depending on the direction of the curve it can be either cyma recta, where the concave part is above the convex, or cyma reversa, where the concave portion is below the convex.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the Roman ogee router bit into the router. Wear safety glasses.

    • 2

Set up the router table to run a 1/8-inch cut.

    • 3

Run the scrap wood counterclockwise across the router to achieve a clean cut.

    • 4

Move the router bit 1/4-inch lower and make a second pass. Repeat this process until the edge of your piece is completely routed.

    • 5

Inspect the results of your cut. If the desired cut has been achieved use your intended piece of material. If not, repeat Steps 2 through 4 with different measurements. Instead of using an initial 1/8-inch cut start with 1/16-inch or 1/4-inch. If this doesn't produce the results you want, try changing the amount you drop the router to 1/8-inch intervals.
