How to Craft Cabinets Yourself

Cabinets are often decorated or crafted with trimming or molding to add personality and décor to a kitchen. Homemade cabinets made with hardwood or plywood can be crafted and decorated using basic trimming or molding. It is a simple process, so crafting all of your kitchen cabinets may only take a day. However, the process may take a full weekend if you built the cabinets and added trimming prior to painting the full cabinet set in your kitchen.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the door from the cabinet unit by using the screwdriver to remove the hinges from the door itself. Leave the hinges on the cabinet unit, so the door is easily reattached after the crafting procedure is complete.

    • 2

Use the measuring tape to determine how long and wide your trimming needs to be to craft your kitchen cabinets. For example, you may want to create a trimming border that is placed 1-inch inward from the cabinet sides, so measure 1 inch in from each side. Write the measurements down, including the height and width of your desired trimming design. Also, draw an outline on the cabinet door where you wish to attach the trimming.

    • 3

Apply the measurements on your chosen trimming pieces. Apply the length collected in the previous step to the trimming by marking the trimming with a pencil. Do the same by using the width measurement.

    • 4

Use the square to create a 45-degree angle on the ends of the trimming. When you place the four trimming pieces together to create a rectangle, you want smooth corners achieved by creating 45-degree angles. The 45-degree angles must be mirrored on the ends, so one end slants to the left, while the other end slants to the right. The outer perimeter of the trimming must always be longer compared to the inner side of the trimming.

    • 5

Cut the trimming with the table saw. Smooth the angles and cut ends with sandpaper.

    • 6

Apply wood glue on the back of the trimming. Place the trimming on the cabinet door, where you added the pencil lines. Use the level to ensure the trimming is placed evenly before the wood glue dries. Secure the trimming to the cabinet using the 1/2-inch screws and a battery-powered screwdriver. Depending on the trimming brand, it may be pre-marked for the screw installation. If not, then install the screws in the non-decorative area of the trimming.

Use a paintbrush to apply a coat of paint to the cabinet, including the newly added trimming, so the new crafted cabinet is the same color. If you want a more solid finish, add two or more layers of paint. Reattach the cabinet door to the cabinet once the paint is dry using the screwdriver and the screws that held the cabinet door in place prior to starting.
