Normal Countertop to Cabinet Height

When building your own kitchen cabinets and mounting them in place, you must be familiar with standard kitchen cabinet measurements and mounting height standards. The measurement does not only refer to the cabinet sizes and depths, but also to the chosen countertop and wall mounted-cabinet heights. However, there are some design issues that may alter the normal countertop to cabinet height in a standard kitchen.
  1. Normal Countertop to Wall Cabinet Height

    • The standard height between the floor and the top of the wall-mounted cabinets is 96 inches. Since the standard height of floor cabinets is 34 1/2 inches and wall-mounted cabinets, 30 inches, the total space between the floor cabinets and the bottom of the wall-mounted cabinets is 31 1/2 inches. However, this figure may be influenced by several factors.

    Top Cabinet Placement

    • The top cabinet is commonly placed a couple of inches below the ceiling’s surface, so the cabinets get proper ventilation to avoid wood decay and mold. However, some handmade cabinets and layouts do hang cabinets closer to the ceiling, meaning that the distance between the countertop and the hanging cabinet does change slightly. If this is the case, you should measure the distance between the bottom of the hanging cabinet and the countertop for a specific figure.

    Smaller Overhead Cabinets

    • The distance between the countertop surface and the bottom of hanging cabinets is greater when speaking about small overhead cabinets, also known as refrigerator cabinets. These cabinets are only 15 inches tall, meaning the distance between the countertop and the bottom of these cabinets is 46 1/2 inches. This measurement does not include a countertop.

    Countertop Influences

    • The 31 1/2-inch distance between the hanging cabinet and the countertop identified in step one does not include the countertop itself. Countertops that are 1 inch thick will influence the distance between the cabinet height and countertop by 1 inch, meaning the total distance will be 30 1/2 inches. Countertops come in various thicknesses and each will affect the distance between the cabinet and countertop.
