How to Build a Folding Desk in a Kid's Room

Measure the space where you wish to mount the folding desk in your child's room. The desk must be at least 18 inches wide, so use the measuring tape to decide on the general length. If the desk is wider than 40 inches long, you will require two folding shelf brackets. Write your measurements down.

Draw the desk surface on the 1/2-inch thick plywood using width and length measurements from the previous step using a pencil and measuring tape. Create a rectangular or square shelf for your child or create a half-moon design, where you place the straight line alongside the wall. This is possible, as long as the half-moon design is wide enough to support one or two 18-inch brackets.

Cut the desk out using the table saw. Sand the edges when done to ensure your child does not get cuts or splinters after you have installed the folding desk.

Use the wall stud finder to find supportive studs for the folding desk. Make a mark with the pencil when you find a stud. Mount the founding shelf bracket to the wall, so you can attach the bracket to the wall studs using the 3-inch screws and a cordless drill. Use the level to ensure the bracket is evenly mounted.

Place the desk on top of the folding shelf bracket and attach it to the bracket using 1/4-inch screws and a screwdriver. Ensure the desk surface is securely attached to the bracket.

Paint the folding desk using a paintbrush and your child's chosen paint colors. You can make decorations on the desk's surface, such as flowers, stars and various shapes.
