How to Cut With Circular Saw Blades

Circular saws and electric drills are the most ubiquitous power tools. The size of the circular saw is the diameter of the round saw blade. The blade cuts to a depth about 1/3 the diameter of the blade. Circular saws are available in sizes up to 16 inches, but the most common size is 7 1/4 inches; with that saw you can cut through a 2-by-4 in a single pass with the blade turned at a 45-degree angle. The saws come in two basic motor and gear designs. The traditional design is an "in-line saw", and they are available online and through most home improvement stores. Worm drive saws generate more torque and cost more.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy an in-line saw for most do-it-yourself projects. Buy a worm drive saw for heavy, everyday construction use like framing a house.

    • 2

Use a steel or carbide blade to cut wood. Use a tile-cutting blade to cut ceramic tile, and use a masonry blade to cut concrete and brick.

    • 3

Unplug your circular saw or remove the power pack before changing blades. Immobilize the blade by shoving a scrap of wood between the saw teeth and the blade guard, and turn the nut in the center of the blade counterclockwise with an open-end wrench. Remove the nut; then remove the blade.

    • 4

Loosen the wing nut on the depth guide to adjust the depth of the cut you want to make. Tighten the wing nut securely to lock this adjustment.

    • 5

Loosen the wing nut on the bevel scale plate to adjust the angle of the cut you want to make, from 90 degrees to 45 degrees. Lock this adjustment by tightening the wing nut.

    • 6

Operate the saw by simultaneously squeezing the trigger and depressing the lock button above the trigger.

    • 7

Set the saw base plate flat on the work piece you want to cut without the blade touching the work piece; then squeeze the trigger and depress the lock button. Push the saw away from you slowly and steadily to make your cut.
