How to Make a Texturing Tool for Woodturning

Surface embellishments are one of the many ways you can make woodturning projects stand out. By altering the surface through carving, pyrography, painting or sculpting, you can make your project more appealing, and if you are trying to sell your work, catch the eye of more potential buyers. Making a texturing or chatter tool is a quick way to bring detail to your work.

Things You'll Need

  • Dowel rod, 1-inch diameter
  • Handsaw
  • Vise
  • Sandpaper
  • Rag or paper towel
  • Hacksaw blade
  • Pliers
  • Tin snips
  • Bench grinder
  • 5-minute epoxy
  • String or twine

Instructions

      Cut a 1-inch dowel into a 12-inch length. Sand the ends until they are smooth.

      Wrap the dowel in a rag or paper towel. Clamp the dowel perpendicular to your work bench.

      Saw a slot in the center of the dowel to a depth of 2 inches using the handsaw. Clean the inside of the cut with sandpaper.

      Grip a hacksaw blade with a pair of pliers, or clamp the blade in a vise. Use tin snips to cut a piece 3 inches long.

      Grind the ends of the cut hacksaw blade on a bench grinder to shape one end flat and the other end with a slight point.

      Insert the flat end of the cut hacksaw blade into the slot in the dowel and center the blade. Apply 5-minute epoxy to cement the blade in place. Allow the epoxy to cure.

      Wrap the top two inches of the dowel, where the blade is centered. in string or twine, Apply a thin coat of epoxy to the area and allow it to dry and harden overnight. The next morning, the texturing tool is ready for use.
