How to Take Sticky Furniture Polish Off Old Wood Furniture

Furniture polish can leave a sticky residue on wood. Polish adds shine to wood surfaces, but if you are ready to refinish your furniture or if you just want the polish off for appearance purposes, scrubbing with water probably will not get the job done. Most furniture polish is waxy, so a more aggressive approach is necessary to thoroughly remove it.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a bucket with warm water. Add a squirt of grease-cutting dish soap. Mix the water and soap well.

    • 2

Dip a soft cloth into the soapy water. Wring it out well.

    • 3

Scrub the furniture with the cloth and soapy water. Rinse and wring out the cloth frequently. If the polish is not too thick or is water-soluble, this may be all that is necessary to remove it.

    • 4

Fill a clean bucket with 1 gallon of hot water, if some polish remains. Add 2 tbsp. gum turpentine and 4 tbsp. boiled linseed oil. Put on rubber gloves, and mix the ingredients well.

    • 5

Dip a clean, soft cloth into the mixture. Wring it out well.

    • 6

Scrub the furniture with the cloth and cleaning solution until all the polish is off.

    • 7

Wipe the furniture with a clean, soft, dry cloth once all the polish is gone.
