How to Make a Movable Bookcase

A movable bookcase is an ideal solution to organizing a small space with multiple functions. These bookcases have casters on the bottom and are open on both sides for ease of access. You could even use this type of bookcase as a mobile room divider. You can make your own movable bookcase instead of purchasing one. This bookcase measures 48 inches tall, 24 inches deep and 43 1/2 inches wide, though you can custom build the bookcase to your size and space requirements. Use furniture-grade plywood for a durable and attractive result.

  • 4 plywood sheets, 3/4-by-24-by-42-inches

Instructions

    • 1

Position the two 3/4-by-24-by-48-inch plywood sheets vertically and parallel to each other. The 3/4-by-48-inch edges should be flat on a work surface. Space them 42 inches apart from the inside edges. These are the sides of the bookcase.

    • 2

Place one 3/4-by-24-by-42-inch plywood sheet between the top ends of the bookcase sides and another such sheet between the bottom ends of the sides. The 3/4-by-42-inch edges should be flush on the work surface. These are the top and bottom plywood sheets for the bookcase. Space the remaining two 3/4-by-24-by-42-inch plywood sheets between the sides so that they are evenly spaced between the top and bottom plywood sheets. These are the shelves for the bookcase.

    • 3

Drive six evenly spaced pan-head screws through the sides into the ends of the top and bottom boards at each joint. Drive another six pan-head screws through the sides into the ends of the shelves at each joint to complete the bookcase assembly.

    • 4

Align one caster in each corner of the bottom of the bookcase assembly. Drive the screws that were included with the casters through the mounting holes into the bottom of the bookcase with a screw gun.

Apply two coats of wood finish to the movable bookcase with a paintbrush. Allow the wood finish to dry at least 4 hours before applying a second coat.
