How to Build Decorative Window Trim

Decorative window trim creates a traditional appearance on your home. The top window trim board is often cut to feature a decorative edge along the top of the window. You can also cut the side trim boards in a decorative manner to create an elegant and graceful curve around your window opening. Select window trim boards that are made from cedar so that they are long lasting. Cedar is naturally rot and insect resistant and is a traditional material for window trim. Adjust the dimensions of the trim to meet your needs.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the trim boards out flat on a work surface. Form the flexible curve along each outside edge of the boards. Create a decorative curve along each outside edge using the flexible curve.

    • 2

Trace the flexible curve ruler along each curve you formed along each outside edge of each board with a pencil.

    • 3

Cut out each curve along the outside edges of each board using a band saw. Guide each board along the pencil lines moving just fast enough to allow the blade to cut through the wood to complete each cut.

Sand the cut edges of the trim boards with the grain of the wood using a fine-grit sanding pad until they are smooth.
