How to Fill Joints With Wood Filler

You don’t have to throw away or donate your furniture just because of few imperfections such as holes or cracks in the joints. Instead you can use wood filler to remove those imperfections and make the furniture look perfect again. Before tackling your project, however, you need to select your wood filler. When selecting wood filler, you need to purchase the right type for furniture repair. You don’t want to use regular wood filler on furniture joints because it won’t provide the support needed. You want to buy a type of wood filler called wood putty.

      Purchase the wood filler color you need. Look at the wood furniture. You want to match the wood filler with the color of the wood. Manufacturers make wood fillers in different colors ranging from white to mahogany to ebony. Also, you want to select oil-based wood filler.

      Clean the surface of the joint. Remove all the dirt and debris on the furniture joint using soap and water. Dry the surface after cleaning.

      Use a putty knife to scoop the filler from the container. Press the wood filler, using the putty knife, into the holes or cracks of the joint. You don’t have to worry about applying the wood filler quickly. Wood putty typically remains flexible for a long time, unlike most wood fillers.

      Wipe off the excess wood filler. Wet a cloth. Rub the wood from the surrounding areas of the joint. You can also wipe the area where you just inserted the filler. You want the joint to have a smooth surface.

      Let the wood filler dry.
