How to Fix a Crack in a Wood Board

Several factors can cause wood boards in flooring to crack. Excessive heat or cold, quick transitions between aridity and humidity, and simple wear. These cracks not only pose a safety risk with tripping, but they also can harbor dirt and bacteria as well as making a floor look unkempt. Simple cracks that have not compromised the integrity of the wood can be fixed. Large cracks that go throughout the length of a wood board, however, necessitate the replacement of the entire board.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase wood putty that is as close to the color of the board as possible. Use a plastic spatula or trowel to push the putty deep inside the crack. Smooth out the putty. Use small amounts and do not over apply. Let the putty dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 2

Sand over the putty. Use a medium-grade sandpaper to go over the putty until the patch is flush with the rest of the wood. Go around the sides of the crack with the sandpaper as well to blend in the entire area. Wipe the board with a damp cloth to remove any dust.

Stain over the patched area. Use a stain that matches the color of the board. Spread it on using a paintbrush and work with very thin, light coats. You may need to apply more than one coat depending on how dark the rest of the board is.

Seal over the patched area with a new or cleaned paintbrush. Use a clear polycoat or varnish to protect the patched area. This helps keep moisture from entering into the patch and ruining it. A clear coat also helps prevent future cracks from appearing.
