How to Bend Veneer Around a Cone

One of the benefits of using wood veneer is that its minimal thickness allows you to bend it as needed. You can shape veneer into single plane curves or even along concave surfaces. While it is impossible to fit veneer in one piece into a ball shape, bending it into a cone is doable. The key is starting with a circle of veneer large enough to cover the cone. Adhere the veneer in place with contact cement as it is bent.

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Measure the height of the cone from the base to the peak with a tape measure. Use a geometric compass to draw a circle with a diameter the same dimension as the height of the cone plus 1/2 inch onto a sheet of wood veneer in your choice of grains.

    • 2

Cut out the circle of veneer with a razor craft knife. Use a straight edge to cut a straight line from the center mark of the circle to the outer edge with the razor knife. Draw a line straight down from the peak of the cone to the bottom edge.

    • 3

Apply a coat of contact cement to the cone and the back of the veneer with a paintbrush. Allow the contact cement to dry completely, until it is dry to the touch.

    Application

    • 4

Fit one edge of the slit you cut along the line drawn on the cone. Position the center of the circle even with the peak of the cone. Press the veneer to the cone with a well sanded wood block. Work around the cone pressing the veneer to it. The bottom edge of the veneer will overhang the bottom edge of the cone.

    • 5

Continue working around the cone until the second edge of the slit slightly overlaps the first edge. Use a razor craft knife to cut through both pieces of veneer where they overlap to create a perfect seam.

    • 6

Trim the overhanging veneer at the bottom of the cone, using the knife. Press the knife down through the veneer against the edge of the cone to cut it flush with the bottom of the cone all the way around. Sand the edge with sandpaper to smooth it.
