How to Make a Doorknob Coat Rack

If you're looking for a fun way to make a coat rack, consider using old doorknobs instead of regular hooks or spindles. Antique or interesting doorknobs make an ordinary coat rack into something extraordinary and completely unique. This project requires minimum experience in woodworking and can be completed in less than a day. The majority of the time spent will be finding unique doorknobs for your project. Instructions

    • 1

Determine how many knobs you need and their placement. Decide how many coats or hats you will need to hang on this rack. Each knob should be at least 3 to 4 inches apart for clothing to hang properly. Choose a wood board that will accommodate the right amount of knobs.

    • 2

Stain or paint the wood board. Use your desired color of wood stain or paint, and apply at least two thin coats to the board. If you stained the board, go over it again with a clear coat of polyurethane to protect the finish.

    • 3

Mark the placement of your knobs on the board. Arrange the doorknobs on the wood, and use a pencil to make a small mark where each should go.

    • 4

Attach the spindles. Place one spindle on the finished side of the board. Using a drill, insert a screw through the board and part of the spindle. The screw will need to penetrate at least a half-inch into the spindle to hold clothing without snapping the spindle off. Repeat until all of the spindles have been attached to the board.

    • 5

Place the doorknobs on the spindle. Work one spindle at a time. Apply a generous coating of wood glue to the spindle, and slide the doorknob over it. Press the knob firmly on to the spindle. Move to the next one, and repeat until you are done.

Let your project dry. Give the wood glue at least 24 hours to cure properly before hanging up and using your doorknob coat rack.
