How to Mix a Glaze for Antiquing

The next time you redecorate your home, try refinishing wood furniture or cabinets with an antique glaze. Applying an antique glaze to wood is an effective way of bringing a vintage look to your home without purchasing expensive new furniture or hiring a costly professional woodworker. One way to antique furniture at a minimal cost is to apply a homemade antique glaze. Homemade antique glazes provide professional results without requiring the purchase of a glazing compound.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 cups linseed oil
  • Large saucepan
  • Medium-size container with airtight lid
  • 1 cup French white chalk
  • 1 cup turpentine
  • Wooden mixing stick
  • 8 tbsp. wetted pigment
  • 1/8 tsp. Japan drier

Instructions

      Pour 2 cups linseed oil into a large saucepan.

      Bring the linseed oil to a boil. Once the oil has boiled, remove the saucepan from the heat and set the oil aside. Allow the oil to cool down.

      Remove the lid from a medium-size container.

      Combine 1 cup French white chalk and 1 cup turpentine in the container.

      Use a wooden mixing stick to blend the two ingredients.

      Pour the linseed oil into the container.

      Add 8 tbsp. wetted pigment and 1/8 tsp. Japan drier to the mixture. Use the mixing stick to thoroughly combine all of the ingredients.

      Immediately use the glaze, or replace the airtight lid onto the container and store it until the desired time of use.
