How to Make a Storage Headboard Room Divider

Divide your room with a headboard room divider with shelves so that it will provide added storage space. This style of headboard is ideal for large rooms and loft spaces because it provides storage space and divides the room so you can use the space more effectively. Instead of purchasing a headboard room divider you can make your own out of hardwood boards to construct a large bookcase-like structure.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the 1-by-16-by-96-inch boards parallel to each other with the 1-by-96-inch sides flat on a work surface. Space the boards 72 inches apart from the outside edges using a tape measure. These are the top and bottom boards of the headboard room divider.

    • 2

Position one 1-by-16-by-70-1/2-inch board between each end of the top and bottom boards to form a rectangle. The 1-by-70-1/2-inch sides should be flush against the work surface. These are the side boards of the divider.

    • 3

Insert the four 1-by-16-by-94-1/2-inch boards between the sides and parallel to the top and bottom boards. Use a tape measure to locate the boards 12, 24, 36 and 48 inches up from the bottom edge of the bottom board. The 1-by-94-1/2-inch sides should be flush against the work surface. These are the shelves.

    • 4

Drive decorative head wood screws through the top and bottom boards into the ends of the sides every two inches using a screw gun. Drive decorative head wood screws through the sides into the ends of the shelf boards at each joint. Space the screws every two inches.

Align the plywood panel over the assembly so that it covers the bottom 48 inches of the assembly. The edges of the plywood should be flush with the outside edges of the assembly. Drive decorative head wood screws through the panel into the edges of the assembly every two to four inches with a screw gun. This is the back panel for the headboard room divider. It butts up against the bed to form a headboard.

Brush two even coats of wood finish onto the completed assembly with a paintbrush. Allow the finish to dry four hours between coats and wait for the final coat to dry 24 hours before use.
