How to Make a Bullnose Trim

Bullnose trim has a beautiful rounded profile. It is a versatile style of molding that is often used for furniture pieces, baseboards, chair rails and door and window trim. You can make your own custom bullnose trim using a router table equipped with a bullnose router bit. Bullnose trim is often limited to a single style and species of wood unless you go to a custom millwork shop. Making your own trim is an affordable option that will allow you to select a species of wood to complement, accent or match the wood used in your overall project.

Instructions

    • 1

Adjust the fence on the router table so that it is 1 inch away from the center of the router bit. Press down on the locking lever on the fence to lock it in place.

    • 2

Insert the bullnose router bit into the arbor of the router. Tighten and lock the arbor with the wrench that came with the router table. Adjust the height of the bit, using the height adjustment wrench included with the router table, so that it will cut the full profile of the bit into the board.

    • 3

Position each board flat on the router table with the 1-by-96-inch edge flat against the surface of the table. One 2-by-96-inch edge should be flat against the fence of the router table.

    • 4

Guide the boards one at a time through the router table just fast enough to allow the bit to cut the bullnose profile into the wood.

    • 5

Sand the routed edge of each trim board with a fine-grit sanding pad until the surface is completely smooth. Sand in the same direction as the wood grain.
