How to Oil a Butcher Block Countertop

Butcher block countertops are practical work surfaces for cutting and chopping foods. Over time, the constant use coupled with daily scrubbings tends to leave the surface of the wood dry. Applying a food-grade oil preserves the wood and gives it a temporary finish. This is an ongoing process that you will need to practice almost monthly to fill the wood pores, helping the surface repel food particles, liquids and oil.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe down your butcher block with a damp rag, removing any food particles left behind from the last meal preparation. Dry the surface with a kitchen towel.

    • 2

Pour a few ounces of food-grade mineral oil (not food-based oil) or raw tung oil directly onto the surface of the countertop. Rub it in with a clean cotton cloth, working in a circular motion until the entire surface is covered. Add more oil if necessary until no more oil soaks into the wood.

    • 3

Allow the oil to oxidate overnight and add more the next day, repeating the same procedure of pouring on the oil and working it into the grain of the wood. Save the cloth in a plastic resealable bag instead of using a new cloth each time.

Repeat the daily oiling for a week. The butcher block countertop should then have a well-oiled surface, resistant to moisture and food. This procedure is for new or refinished surfaces. Once the surface is well sealed, oil the wood only once a month to keep the finish fresh.
