How to Build Wooden-Box Frames for Roses

To build a wooden "shadow box" type frame to accent your rose displays, select a quality hardwood such as maple or cherry for the frame so it will complement the beauty of the roses. The frame features mitered corners so it is decorative and joins together like a picture frame. It measures 8 inches wide and 18 inches tall, but you can adjust the dimensions to suit your specific needs. The box can be placed on a shelf or table to create a decorative border around your roses. It could also be mounted to the wall with the addition of keyhole slot hangers to the back edges.

Instructions

    • 1

Adjust the miter saw to make a 45-degree angle cut by loosening the knob on the saw and tilting it until the gauge is aligned with the 45-degree mark. Tighten the knob to lock the saw in place.

    • 2

Lay each board flat on the table of the miter saw, one at a time. Saw each end of each 1-by-6-by-18-inch and 1-by-6-by-8-inch board on the same side with the miter saw so the boards fit together like a picture frame.

    • 3

Apply wood glue to the ends of each board and place the boards together to form a rectangular box assembly. The 1-by-6-by-18-inch boards are the sides. The 1-by-6-by-8-inch boards are the top and bottom.

    • 4

Center a frame clamp around the rectangular assembly and tighten it. Wipe off the excess glue that drips from the corner joints with a damp cloth. Allow the glue to dry for 24 hours and remove the clamp.

    • 5

Spray the assembly with an even coat of spray lacquer. Allow the lacquer to dry four hours and apply a second coat. Wait for the final coat to dry 24 hours before handling it.

    • 6

Center one keyhole slot mount on each end of the back of the 1-by-18-inch side edges approximately 1 inch in from each end if you want to mount the box frame on the wall. The narrow ends of the slot mounts should be facing up.

    • 7

Drive the screws included with the slot mounts through the holes into the sides with a screw gun.
