How to Make a White Lacquer Finish

Lacquer finish is used to cover stained and painted surfaces. It is amber tinted but considered a clear coat. However, its main benefit is that it dries harder and thicker than most all other finishes. However, you can create a white lacquer finish for painting various wooden surfaces. You can make white lacquer finish in 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the batch.

Instructions

    • 1

Add 1/2 cup of paint thinner to a 1 gallon paint bucket. Measure and add 1 cup of lacquer flakes to the pain thinner, and gently stir the ingredients with a paint mixing stick. Allow the lacquer to sit for 15 minutes and restir with the mixing stick. To thicken the lacquer, add 1/4-cup of paint thinner at a time until you achieve a mixture consistent with syrup. Add more flakes--1/2-cup at a time--to thicken the mixture.

Add 1/2 cup of white powdered paint dye to the lacquer, distributing the powder evenly over the lacquer mixture. Mix the ingredients with a food blender until the white coloring has completely blended with the lacquer. Allow the lacquer mixture to sit for 30 minutes so that the dye might be fully assimilated.

Test the white tinted lacquer to observe its color. Paint a small amount of lacquer onto a piece of wood and allow it to dry for 30 minutes. If the mixture is too dark, add 1/8 cup of paint thinner and 1/4 cup of lacquer flakes; if the mixture is not white enough, then add 1/4 cup of white dye until the color is attained.

Preserve the mixture for later use by placing it on a covered container. Because the blend will settle and separate, remix the ingredients with a food blender.
