How to Make Wooden L-Brackets for a Floating Bookshelf

A floating bookshelf is an ideal way to make use of vertical wall space. You can make your own wooden L-brackets to support the the floating bookshelf you plan to install on your wall. L-brackets can be made from any quality hardwood including ash, birch and maple. Select a hardwood species to complement or accent your floating bookshelf. The L-bracket is 24 inches long for a 24-inch floating bookshelf. You can modify the dimensions to fit the size of your space.

Instructions

    • 1

Set one 1-by-3 that's 24 inches long on a work surface with the 1-by-24-inch side resting flat. This is the wall mount board that forms part of the bracket.

    • 2

Position another 1-by-3-by-24-inch board on top of the wall mount board. The 3-by-24-inch side should rest flat on top of the 1-by-24-inch edge of the wall mount board. One 1-by-24-inch edge of this board should be flush with the outside edge of the wall mount board so an L shape is formed if you look at the assembly from the end. This is the shelf mount board that forms part of the bracket.

    • 3

Apply a bead of wood glue where the two boards form a joint. Press the boards back together.

    • 4

Drive trim head wood screws through the shelf mount board into the top edge of the wall mount board every 2 inches, usin the screw gun. Wipe off any glue that drips out with a damp cloth.

    • 5

Drill a 1/8-inch-diameter hole through the center of the width of each board 2 inches in from each end, using a tape measure to accurately space the holes. Drill the holes with a drill and a 1/8-inch bit. These are the mounting holes for the L-bracket.
