Sand down any rough areas around the crack. Use a medium grade of sandpaper and smooth out any rough edges around the crack.
Fill in the crack with wood filler. While you can be enterprising and make your own filler using shavings from the wood, it is much faster to simply use a pre-made filler that is the same color as the wood. Fill in the crack tightly. Use a plastic putty knife to apply the filler or putty and scrape away any excess. Let the putty dry completely.
Sand over the putty. Use a fine grade of sandpaper to get rid of any ridges or edges in your patch. The surface should be entirely smooth to the touch.
Stain the patched area. Apply at least one coat of matching wood stain over the patch. This will help blend in the area with the rest of the wood. Let this dry, then rough it up with a fine grade of sandpaper.
Clear coat the patch. To protect the wood and reduce the chance of potential mold growth or expansion, seal over the area with a clear polyurethane. Use a brush and go with the grain of the wood. Let this coat dry, then sand again and apply a final top coat.
