What Kind of Wood Putty Will Take a Stain on Oak Stair Treads?

There is a huge variety of wood putty on the market today. It's important to know which type will be best for the job before purchasing and applying it to your oak stair treads. There are several options when you are looking for putty that can be applied to wood and stained. Examine your stair treads and determine how large the job will be to help you decide which putty will be most effective.
  1. Wood Pore Filler

    • If you have large pores or small cracks to patch, wood pore filler may be the best putty for your job. You can purchase this type of filler in two different forms which can both be sanded and stained. There is a thinner form that can be brushed on or a thicker form which can be applied with a putty knife. Keep in mind that the thinner form can shrink when applied to large cracks.

    Solvent-Based Filler

    • Solvent-based wood fillers actually contain wood and are known for having minimal shrinkage. Thus, they are best for filling large cracks in a way that looks natural and can be stained. Solvent-based wood fillers are fast drying, and can be sanded and even drilled. These wood fillers are also ideal for use outdoors as they will hold up to the elements.

    Water-Based Filler

    • Water-based wood fillers can be used for small repairs, but can shrink in large cracks. The advantage of water-based fillers is that they can be easily cleaned and can be stained. Thus, if you spill it or smear it on too large of an area, you can simply wipe it up with a cloth. Water-based fillers should not be used outdoors in cold climates, as they can expand when freezing.

    Colored Wood Putty

    • You can buy colored wood putty to match your existing stain, as opposed to staining over a putty you have applied. Colored wood putty is available in many shades and is ideal for small nicks and nail holes because it does not need to be sanded. Colored wood putty can be used inside or outdoors.
