How to Repair Cracks in a Briar Pipe Exterior

Briar wood is a commonly used to make fine tobacco pipes. According to "Popular Science" writer Herbert Shuldiner, the wood is generally taken from old, rugged trees so it is particularly tough. This makes pipe repair challenging. However, pipes often have monetary or sentimental value so repairing the pipe is preferable to disposing of it. You can have the pipe professionally repaired or fix it yourself. An external crack is easier to fix than an internal crack.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix briar sawdust with a flexible epoxy until it looks like putty. You will only need enough to fill the crack so start small.

    • 2

Press the puttylike mixture into the crack and let it cure until the epoxy is completely dry. Follow the manufacturer's instructions or wait two days.

    • 3

Sand the epoxy fill with 320-grit sandpaper until it is flush with the pipe's surface. Avoid scratching the pipe bowl as you work.

    • 4

Rub the pipe with a pumice and olive oil to nourish and shine the wood.
