How to Fix a Pedestal Table That Only Needs a Wooden Base

Stylish and attractive, pedestal tables traditionally feature a round tabletop on a base. The base typically has four legs and four supports to hold up the tabletop. If you have a pedestal tabletop without the base, you can fix it by making a wooden base for it. Use furniture-grade hardwood plywood to make the base so that you can finish it to match the existing tabletop. The base consists of two interlocking x-shaped plywood panels. Together they will form a sturdy base and support for the pedestal tabletop.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the plywood panels flat on a work surface. Measure the center of one 24-inch end on each panel with a tape measure and mark it with a pencil. Draw a 3/4-by-14-inch notch straight up the 28-inch length of the panel from the center mark on each panel, using a tape measure, T-square and pencil.

    • 2

Cut out the 3/4-by-14-inch notch from each panel using a jigsaw. The notches will interlock to form an X-shaped assembly that will be the base for the pedestal table.

    • 3

Draw a concave curve on each 28-inch side of the panels using a flexible curve ruler and pencil. The curve will form the outside shape of the table legs and supports. Make the curve flowing and graceful. Cut out each curve using the jigsaw.

    • 4

Sand the cut edges of the plywood panels with a fine-grit sanding pad until they are completely smooth.

    • 5

Interlock the two notched ends to form a X-shaped assembly. Stand the assembly upright so that it resembles and x from the top view.

    • 6

Drill a pilot hole 1 inch in from the top outside ends of the X-shaped base assembly, using a drill with a 1/8-inch countersink bit.

    • 7

Center the tabletop over the base assembly. Drive a pan-head wood screw through each pilot hole into the bottom of the tabletop, using a screw gun.

    • 8

Apply an even coat of matching wood finish over the entire base assembly, using a paintbrush. Wait four hours and apply a second coat. Allow the second coat to dry for 24 hours before using the pedestal table.
