How to Fix a Warped Kitchen Cabinet in the Corner of a Door

Water damage is the most common cause for a warped cabinet door. Depending on the extent of the warping, this problem can be fixed without having to replace the door. If the warp is less than a 1/4-inch off of level, you can remove the warping. If it is more than that, replacement may be necessary, especially if the cabinet wood is thin and old. Basic woodworking skills are helpful for this project but not necessary.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the cabinet door from its hinges. Set the screws aside in a plastic bag.

    • 2

Run a hand planer across the warped section of the door once, pressing down firmly.

    • 3

Lay a level on top of the door. If it does not read level, you will need to keep planing. Alternate planing with checking for level until the door reads as level.

    • 4

Lightly sand the surface with a fine-grit sandpaper to make it receptive to wood stain or paint. Wipe off the sanding dust with a towel or tack cloth.

    • 5

Apply the matching latex paint or wood stain with the grain using a paintbrush. Let this dry for at least four hours before proceeding.

    • 6

Apply one coat of polyurethane with a paintbrush to seal the door. This will help prevent future water damage to and warping of the door.

    • 7

Rehang the cabinet door. Use the level again to make sure the door is level on its frame and level with the other cabinet doors. Adjust the screws as necessary until you achieve a level reading.
