How to Make Birch Plywood Floor Tiles

If you are looking for an economical and unique alternative to traditional tile, birch plywood is an option. This is a much higher grade of plywood than obviated strand board or regular plywood. You can stain this wood to any color you would like, or just keep it natural and seal it with polyurethane for a lightly colored floor. You can cut down on the time for this project by creating a special template for the tiles.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the size of your tile an mark your measurements on a piece of cardboard. Trace your measurement lines out with a pencil and cut it with a utility knife.

    • 2

Trace out the tile shapes on the back of your plywood sheets. Lay down the template on the plywood and use the pencil to trace around it. Leave a few inches between each tile to give yourself enough room to work.

    • 3

Cut the tiles out of the plywood with a circular saw. Feed the plywood through first to make your horizontal cuts, and then to make your vertical cuts. This will create more manageable strips of plywood. Cut out the individual tiles.

    • 4

Sand down the edges and tops of the tiles with a fine-grit sanding block. These surfaces need to be completely smooth. Wipe off any dust with a tack cloth.

    • 5

Stain the wood tiles using the wood stain of your choice. Apply a thin coat of stain with a paint brush or applicator. Let this dry for six to eight hours. Sand the tops of the tiles lightly and wipe off the dust.

    • 6

Seal the tiles with polyurethane. Use a clear, non-yellowing polyurethane. Brush it on with the grain of the wood. Let this dry for at least six hours before installing the tile.
