How to Build Laundry Cabinets With Melamine

Melamine has been called the cabinetmaker's best friend because of its durability, ease of cleaning and attractive finish. Best of all, this material does not need to be sanded or painted because it is available in a variety of colors and styles. This simplifies any cabinet project. Installing your own melamine laundry cabinets can ensure that the project is durable, water-resistant and affordable.

Instructions

    • 1

Put down two 12-by-36-inch melamine boards that are a half-inch thick on a working surface. These will be the side boards of the cabinet. Adjust the boards so that they are parallel to each other and set up on their long, thin sides with 2 feet between them.

    • 2

Set against one set of their ends a 12-by-24-inch melamine board that's a half-inch thick. This will serve as the top board. Drill three holes through the top board and into each side board, making six holes total. Use 2-inch wood screws in each hole to fasten the boards together tightly. Repeat for the other end of the side boards, using another 12-by-24-inch melamine board that's a half-inch thick.

    • 3

Place a 24-by-37-inch melamine board that's a half-inch thick on top of this frame, with its edges nicely centered over the edges of the frame. Drill holes every 8 inches through this board -- which is the rear board -- and into the frame boards. Set 2-inch wood screws in place in these holes, and use a drill to affix them in place.

    • 4

Flip the melamine cabinet over, and set another 24-by-37-inch melamine board against the frame. Position two side-mount cabinet hinges between one of the side boards and this new board, which is the door of the cabinet. Mark each screw hole position for the hinges, and drill them out. Attach the hinges to the door and the side board, using half-inch wood screws.

    • 5

Turn the melamine cabinet upright, resting on its bottom board. Hold a 12-by-23-inch melamine board that's a half-inch thick within the cabinet in a preferred shelving position. Mark each side board, and drill two holes in each side board at that level. Set pegs in the holes and the shelf board on the pegs. Repeat for more shelving.
