How to Build a Sharpening Tool Rest

Tool rests are used for sharpening knives, chisels or any other tool that requires a sharpen edge. This device is used in conjunction with a belt sander or grinder to keep the implement at a steady and constant angle while it's being sharpened. This speeds up the honing process and yields a more consistent, straight and sharp edge. A few basic tools and some scrap wood are all you need to make your own tool rest.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Scrap 2-by-4
  • Miter or table saw
  • Handheld drill and bits
  • Bolts and nuts
  • Socket set

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and length of the plate or work space in front of your bench grinder or belt sander. This is the area where you will attach the tool rest.

    • 2

Cut a scrap 2-by-4 to the same width and length noted in Step 1. Place the cut piece onto the plate in front of your grinder or sander or onto your work space for a test-fit.

    • 3
Always observe proper safety when using any cutting tool.

Set a miter or table saw to the desired angle that you wish to sharpen your tools. A common angle is 35 degrees, but this can be any angle appropriate for your method and tools.

    • 4

Cut the block of wood for your tool rest at a cross-wise angle. This will create a wedge on which to rest your tools while sharpening them.

    • 5

Drill holes into the four corners of the tool rest. Use a drill bit the same diameter as the bolts you will be using. If your sander or grinder does not have a plate with pre-drilled holes, use the same drill bit to drill holes through the plate or work area. Place the tool rest on top of the area and mark the location of the holes so you know where to drill.

    • 6

Align the holes on the tool rest and the work area. Insert the bolts. Thread the nuts onto the bolts and tighten them by hand. Use a socket set to finish tightening the bolts to make sure that the tool rest will not move while in use.
