Adjusting a Lazy Susan That Won't Close

Lazy susan cabinets come in many kinds. Some have hinged doors that fold out and work independent of the rotating shelves. This type of cabinet always opens and closes properly, even if the shelf alignment is off. But if your cabinet has flush-mounted doors that swing into the cabinet, even a slight variation in plumb alignment can cause the doors to hang up on the cabinet opening and fail to close all the way. This can be caused from overloading the shelves, faulty installation or stripped screws holding the pole in place. You can reposition the pole using a screwdriver and a level.

Instructions

    • 1

Push or lift on the lazy susan doors in the direction needed to get them inside the cabinet. Use a screwdriver or pry bar if necessary. Rotate the doors one-quarter turn until you see a set of screws securing the doors to the shelves. This type of door fits flush into the cabinet opening and travels around with the shelves. If the plumb alignment is off, the doors tilt slightly and hook on the cabinet face frame.

    • 2

Remove the screws holding the doors to one side of the shelves using a screwdriver. Rotate the doors in the opposite direction one-half turn to expose the other set of screws in the doors. Remove them and lift off the doors.

    • 3

Loosen a screw holding a collar to the pole under the middle shelf, and lower the middle shelf down onto the first shelf. Loosen the screw holding the collar to the top shelf and lower it to the middle shelf.

    • 4

Loosen the screws holding a rectangular bracket at the top of the pole. Rotate the bracket a quarter turn. This is to prevent new screws from entering stripped or old screw holes.

    • 5

Place an 18-inch level along the pole. Tap the pole in the direction needed to plumb the pole vertically. Screw the bracket to the top of the cabinet in the new position using the original screws.

    • 6

Slide the top shelf back into its original position and tighten the screw holding the collar. Slide the middle shelf back into its original position and tighten the screw on the collar to secure it.

    • 7

Screw the doors back on the shelves in the original positions, reversing the steps you took to remove them.
