How to Get a Bit Out of a DeWALT

DeWALT manufactures a wide line of drills and drivers for home and job site use. Their line of drills come in both corded electric models as well as cordless models. DeWALT uses a variety of chucks to secure the drill bits into the drill. Although they still use keyed chucks with the notched gear on the front of the chuck, most of their drills now come with keyless double and single sleeve chucks. Getting a bit out of a DeWALT drill depends upon the type of chuck your drill uses.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the DeWALT power cord from the electrical outlet, if you have a corded drill. If you have a cordless drill, place the directional switch to the neutral position to lock the power trigger.

    • 2

Insert the notched wheel of the chuck key into the notches on the front of the drill chuck. The notch end of the key fits into a hole on the side of the chuck and the notches join the front of the chuck like a gear.

    • 3

Turn the key counterclockwise with your fingers to loosen the chuck jaws. Pull the bit out of the DeWALT drill.

    • 4

Hold the rear of the chuck sleeve in one hand, and rotate the front of the chuck counterclockwise with your free hand if you have a keyless chuck. Some keyless chucks are single sleeve chucks that have a sleeve that pulls back toward the drill body.

    • 5

Pull the single sleeve chuck toward the body of the drill and rotate the sleeve counterclockwise to loosen the jaws and remove the bit.
