How to Install Vinyl Window Weeping Holes

Weep holes installed in vinyl windows allow water to exit the window frame instead of becoming trapped in the wall. If the water is not given a route to drain safely to the outside, it will back up in the window channel, where it will cause damage. You can install weep holes in vinyl windows using a straightforward procedure and some common household tools. The job requires minimal effort and time, even for the inexperienced.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Electric drill
  • 1/8-inch drill bit

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the vinyl window accessory channel, which is the outermost channel on the window frame.

    • 2

Extend a tape measure along the entire bottom edge of the accessory channel. Mark the channel every 6 inches, using a pencil. Make sure you mark each corner.

    • 3

Install an 1/8-inch drill bit into the chuck at the end of an electric drill. Depending on the drill, the chuck will operate with a key or by hand.

    • 4

Hold the drill trigger with your dominant hand, and place your other hand under the front of the drill, behind the chuck. Hold the drill at a 90-degree angle to the surface being drilled when operating the drill to ensure that the hole is straight.

    • 5

Drill a hole through the channel in the frame at each location you marked with pencil. Back out the drill bit from each hole while the bit is still turning to ensure that the hole is drilled clean. Brush away any drilling debris so it does not clog the holes.
