How to Remove a Schlage C-Clip

The C-clip on the Schlage door lock is designed as a retaining clip on the cylinder to hold the plug in position so the pins do not fall out of the cylinder. In order to rekey the lock, you need to remove the C-clip from the cylinder. Removing the C-clip requires a special plastic key gauge that will allow you to depress the C-clip and take it off the cylinder.

Place the key in the keyhole of the Schlage door knob, and turn the key one quarter turn clockwise. Press the catch in on the door shaft behind the door knob with a plastic key gauge, and pull the door knob off the shaft.

Turn the key back one quarter turn counterclockwise, and take the key out of the keyhole. Verify that the keyhole is facing upright, and allow the face of the cylinder to drop down inside the door knob just a bit so you can see the top of the cylinder.

Push the cylinder out of the back of the door knob by pushing on the front of the cylinder with your finger, and take the cylinder out of the back of the door knob.

Locate the C-clip retaining ring on the end of the cylinder, and press the U-shaped cutout on the side of the plastic key gauge against the C-clip to remove the clip from the Schlage cylinder.
