How to Frame a Double-Hung Window

A double-hung window is simply a two-sash window system in which both sashes are able to move up and down. They hang within a casing, which is the border of wood, aluminum or vinyl that immediately surrounds the sashes. The window frame covers the edge of the casing and ties it into the surrounding wall. One classic way of making the frame is to use miter-cut corners.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull your tape measure along the top of the window opening, on the casing, from corner to corner.

    • 2

Transfer the measurement to a piece of trim, with two marks along the bottom, one at each end, leaving your measured distance between them.

    • 3

Set the trim on the miter saw, so the bottom edge is against the rail and the front of the trim is facing upward. Slide the trim so one mark is under the blade. Adjust the blade so it's pointing 45 degrees outward, away from the trim. Make the cut.

    • 4

Move the trim so the second mark is under the blade. Turn the blade to point 45 degrees in the other direction. Cut it. The resulting piece should be the same size along the bottom as the window opening width, and wider along the top, with the end miter cuts angling up and out at both ends.

    • 5

Nail the trim to the wall above the window with your pin nailer, putting two nails per foot. Make sure the mitered ends angle up and out from the two corners.

    • 6

Cut the trim for the remaining three sides in the same manner, installing them one by one. The mitered ends should butt to each other to form the corners.

    • 7

Caulk all around the new frame.
