Single Hung Windows and Different Types

One of the main factors that sets different types of windows apart is how they open and close. Single hung windows open and close vertically, while other styles may slide horizontally or swing or pivot out on hinges like a door. Single hung windows are available in wood, vinyl or metal frames.
  1. Single Hung Windows

    • A single hung window features two glass panes, or sashes, that are stacked atop one another. The lower sash is the practical sash, or the one that opens. The upper sash is fixed, or locked in place. Most single hung windows operate on a counterweight system, with pulleys attached to ropes, attached to metal weights. When the window is lifted, the weight drops down in a hidden pocket in the wall, assisting the window and holding it in place. When the window is closed, the weight rides up and hangs hidden on its rope. If the balance is correct, it will open and stop at any point on its path.

    Single or Divided Pane

    • Single hung window sashes are available in both single and divided panes. Most modern "divided" panes are not truly divided, having muntins that rest atop the glass. Older wooden windows frequently have true divided panes, with two or three rows of small individual glass panes in the same sash. The upper fixed sash is typically the same style of pane as the lower. Divided glass is often labeled according to the number of panes, or "lights." For instance, a single hung window with four panes in each sash is an "eight light" window.

    Frame Types

    • Traditional house window sashes are made of wood. Many modern windows have vinyl, composite or metal frames. These newer styles are typically operated with a spring cartridge as opposed to the traditional metal counterweight found on older wooden windows. One style that is common in single hung windows is the vinyl replacement window, which is designed to be installed inside the original jamb of the house's wooden original wooden windows with the sashes removed.

    Double or Thermal Panes

    • With new energy standards, tax rebates and other savings are frequently available for home owners who install more energy-efficient windows. Single hung windows are available in double glazed or thermal pane windows. These windows work the same as a standard single hung window. They feature two panes of glass sandwiching a layer of dead air or gas, such as argon, between the panes.
