How to Repair Window Weight Ropes

Old double-hung windows run along a track like newer windows, but they are also controlled by weighted ropes. These weighted ropes, or sash cords, keep the window balanced as it moves up and down. These old ropes are prone to wear and breakage over time. Pulling the window out and replacing the ropes may be necessary. When one breaks, make sure to replace the other rope as well to keep the window moving as even as possible.

    • 6

Pull down on the knotted rope to lift the weight. Tie your new rope to the old knotted rope. Allow the weight to drop to pull the new rope through the weight access panels. Cut the old rope to remove it from the weight.
