How to Clear Up Window Condensation

Window condensation forms when the glass on a window is cooler than the air in a room and when the room has a high level of humidity, according to Tom Feiza of How to Operate Your Home. This makes condensation a common occurrence during the winter months when the outside air keeps windows cold. While temporary window condensation doesn't generally cause issues, if condensation remains on windows, problems like mold and mildew may form. To prevent later issues, clear up window condensation as soon as possible.

Eliminate any leaks from outside of your home, including those found in the basement. Fill gaps, cracks or holes around windows or in walls with caulking. Get rid of basement leaks by filling in gaps or cracks that you see with leveling compound and then covering the basement walls with waterproof sealer to prevent moisture penetration.

Fix any plumbing leaks in your home. Run the water in all of the sinks and bathtubs, and run other water-dependent appliances, like the washing machine and dishwasher, and look at the piping connections under the sinks, where the washing machine and dishwasher connect to the wall, and in the basement or crawlspace where the pipes run. If water drips or accumulates around any pipe connections, take the piping apart in those areas and apply new pipe tape around the threads before reconnecting the fixtures. If water continues to drip, replace the connectors or the piping as necessary.

Remove plants if you find that the condensation is worse in areas of your home where you have indoor plants growing. If you do not want to get rid of the plants, limit watering as much as possible. Avoid leaving standing water in the drip trays of planters.

Limit steam-producing water activities around your home as much as possible. Turn the temperature of your hot shower down to warm, wash clothes with cold water, wait to run the dishwasher until it is completely full and don't air dry clothes inside your home. If you have exhaust fans over your stove and in your bathrooms, run them whenever you run water for showers or for dishes and when boiling foods on the stove.
