How to Install Scotch Window Insulator

Proper installation of window insulators save a homeowner money on heating and air conditioning costs. Even the best windows can allow air flow in and out of a home. Sealing off the windows with a plastic coating prevents this. Scotch, a subsidiary of the 3M Corp., makes a window cover system to suit most windows in a home or apartment. The system does not work on mahogany finish or veneer window panes.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the window and surrounding area. Wipe with a clean rag to remove any dust, dirt or other debris before beginning the project.

    • 2

Measure the window sill. Place a measuring tape at the top, left inner edge of window sill and measure to the top right inner edge. Repeat the process for a top-to-bottom measurement.

    • 3

Unfold the window film from the Scotch Window Insulator kit. Cut the film using scissors, adding 2 inches to each measurement. This will leave an extra inch of film on all sides of the piece.

    • 4

Cut and place the included tape around the window sill. Place the tape smoothly along the edge of the window frame, closest to the window.

    • 5

Apply the film to the tape. Begin at the top left corner of the window and smooth the film downward, pressing it into the tape along the edges and bottom.

    • 6

Set a blow dryer to warm and apply heat to the film. Start at the top corner and work side to side, slowly moving down the window. This will remove wrinkles and seal the film to the window.
