How to Replace a Broken Shower Glass Door

Shower doors are designed to allow light into the stall without letting water spray out. These glass doors can be completely clear or translucent, made of glass or heavy plastic. If a shower door becomes cracked, you do not have to replace the entire door and frame. Rather, you can just replace the glass pane at a cheaper cost and in less time. You'll only need a few hand tools and a helping hand.

Instructions

  Put on gloves and lift the glass shower door off the tracks. Do this by lifting up slightly, then pulling the bottom-middle away from the bottom tracks. Once partly free, lift up further and take off the top tracks. Have someone help you, if necessary.

  Lay the glass shower door on a flat surface such as a table.

  Unfasten the handles by taking out the screws on either side of each handle with a screw gun. Place the handles of to the side and the screws in an empty plastic cup.

  Unfasten the retaining screws at each corner of the glass shower door; put the screws in the plastic cup.

  Score along the inside edges of the aluminum frame gently with a utility knife to break the seal. Do this on both sides of the door.

  Wedge the blade of a putty knife up under the aluminum frame and push the putty knife along under the aluminum frame to free the glass pane.

  Take the glass pane to a retail glazier and buy a replacement of the same size and material.

  Slip the aluminum frame onto each of the four sides of the glass pane. Refasten the retaining screws on each corner and then reattach the handle.

  Spread a bead of silicone caulk along the aluminum frame, wiping away excess with a damp rag. Put the glass shower door back on the tracks and use your shower after the silicone caulk has sufficiently dried, in about 24 hours.
