How to Change a Window Set in a Brick Wall

If you have a broken or old window set into a brick wall and need to replace it, you can do it yourself without having to hire a carpenter or professional handyman. But you will need some common hand tools and a little elbow grease. After you have selected and purchased an appropriately-sized and energy-efficient replacement window, you can have the old window out of the brick wall and the new one installed in about an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Unlock the window if applicable. Push up and away from the window frame to remove the window panes, if applicable, on your window. If not, continue to Step 2.

    • 2

Unfasten the retaining screws at the top and bottom of the window frame with a screw gun.

    • 3

Score around the outside of the window frame with a utility knife to break the caulk bead.

    • 4

Slide the blade of a chisel between the window frame and brick wall. Tap the blade into the crevice with a rubber mallet to begin to free the frame from the brick wall.

    • 5

Continue around the frame with the chisel and rubber mallet until you have gone around the entire frame and loosened it. Then pry the window up and down and side to side with a pry bar to free it completely from the opening.

    • 6

Have someone stand on the outside, ready to catch the window as it pops out of the brick wall. Push the window toward the outside of the house.

    • 7

Fit the replacement window into the rough opening in the brick wall left by the old window. Insert the window from the exterior of the house; do not insert it from the interior as the outside framing lip will prevent proper installation.

    • 8

Spread a bead of silicone caulk with a caulk gun around the entire frame of the new window before securing it to the brick wall. Wipe away any excess caulk with a damp rag.

    • 9

Fasten the retaining screws through the replacement window's frame into the pilot holes left by the old window with the screw gun.
