How to Install Spline

Sooner or later, every homeowner will have to replace torn or loose screens on windows and doors. There are commercial companies that will do this work for you, but it is much cheaper to do it yourself. The key to all re-screening projects is the spline. This is the rubber strip that fits in a groove in the door or window, keeping the screen taut. Replacing the screen and spline will make your windows and doors look like new again.

Things You'll Need

  • Spline with a shape and diameter to match the existing spline
  • Spline roller
  • Utility knife

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all old screen and spline from the frame.

    • 2

Center new screen over the frame (if you are replacing the old screen). The new screen should be larger than the old screen by at least 1/2 inch on each side. Giving yourself a little extra will make the job easier.

    • 3

Gently press the screen into the groove of the frame using the convex end of the spline roller.

    • 4

Lay the spline over the screen and groove, starting in one corner of the frame.

    • 5

Press the spline down into the groove at the corner of the frame using the concave end of the spline roller.

    • 6

Roll the spline into the groove while you gently pull the spline taut ahead of the roller. Be careful that the roller is pressing on the spline and not on the screen. The screen can be easily damaged by direct pressure from the roller edge. Work your way to the first corner and make the bend.

    • 7

Roll the spline into the groove along the next side, while keeping the screen centered over the frame. Continue along each side of the frame, pulling the screen taut, until you reach the starting point.

    • 8

Roll over the length of the spline again to settle it in the bottom of the groove and eliminate any bumps.

    • 9

Cut the spline to match up with the starting point.

    • 10

Trim off excess screen using a utility knife.
